A good sports jacket is more than just outerwear – it’s a piece of technical gear designed to protect you from wind, rain, and cold while allowing your body to breathe. To keep it performing at its best, proper care is essential. Many jackets lose their functionality because they’re washed or dried incorrectly. Here’s a guide to help you clean and dry your sports jacket the right way, so it stays in top condition for years.

Know Your Material – and Read the Care Label

Sports jackets come in many types: softshell, hardshell, down, synthetic insulation, and waterproof membranes like Gore-Tex or eVent. Each material requires specific care. The first step is always to read the care label inside your jacket. It tells you the recommended washing temperature, cycle, and whether the jacket can go in the dryer.

As a general rule:

  • Softshell and hardshell jackets should be washed on a gentle cycle with cold or warm water (86–104°F).
  • Down jackets need special down detergent and careful drying to maintain loft.
  • Membrane jackets should never be washed with fabric softener, as it can damage the water-repellent coating.

Use the Right Detergent

Regular laundry detergent can strip away the protective coatings and clog the fabric’s pores. Instead, use a detergent made for technical outerwear. These products clean effectively without harming the jacket’s breathability or water resistance. Avoid fabric softeners, bleach, and stain removers – they can reduce performance and shorten the jacket’s lifespan.

If your jacket has a strong odor, run an extra rinse cycle to remove all detergent residue. This helps maintain comfort and fabric integrity.

Step-by-Step Washing Guide

  1. Close all zippers, Velcro, and snaps to prevent abrasion.
  2. Empty all pockets and remove any detachable parts like hoods or liners.
  3. Turn the jacket inside out to protect the outer surface.
  4. Wash it alone or with similar materials – avoid mixing with cotton or heavy fabrics.
  5. Select a gentle or delicate cycle with low spin speed.
  6. Add the correct amount of technical detergent according to the product instructions.

Remove the jacket from the washer as soon as the cycle ends to prevent wrinkles and mildew.

Drying – The Critical Step

How you dry your jacket is just as important as how you wash it. Most sports jackets have a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish that helps water bead up and roll off. Heat can reactivate this coating, but too much heat can cause damage.

  • Softshell and hardshell jackets: Tumble dry on low heat for 10–15 minutes to reactivate the DWR.
  • Down jackets: Tumble dry on low with a few clean tennis balls or dryer balls to break up clumps and restore loft. This can take several hours, but patience pays off.
  • Membrane jackets: Air-dry on a hanger, then give them a short tumble on low heat to refresh the water-repellent layer.

Avoid drying your jacket directly on a radiator, near a heater, or in direct sunlight – excessive heat can warp the fabric and fade colors.

Reproofing – When Water Stops Beading

If you notice that water no longer beads on the surface but instead soaks into the fabric, it’s time to reproof your jacket. You can do this in two ways:

  • Wash-in treatment: Added to the washing machine during a rinse cycle.
  • Spray-on treatment: Applied directly to the clean, dry jacket.

Spray-on products often give better results because you can target high-wear areas like shoulders and sleeves. After applying, tumble dry on low heat to activate the new coating.

Storage and Maintenance

Once your jacket is clean and dry, store it on a hanger in a cool, dry place. Avoid compressing it in a bag or drawer, as this can damage the insulation and shape. Check zippers, seams, and Velcro regularly, and repair small issues before they become bigger problems. With proper care, a quality sports jacket can last for many seasons of running, hiking, or cycling.

A Jacket That Performs Longer

Proper washing and drying aren’t just about keeping your jacket looking good – they’re about preserving its technical performance. With a little attention and the right products, you can extend its life, save money, and reduce waste by avoiding unnecessary replacements. A well-maintained sports jacket will continue to protect you from the elements, no matter where your adventures take you.
